3. Developing strategic CO2 plans for 2020

In 2012 and 2013, each partner will prepare its own strategic CO2 plan for 2020. They will discuss their plans with the other partners and with their stakeholders. The plans will mobilise many resources in all departments and will show how far you can go in reducing your carbon footprint. The partners will try to become examples in their sector.

First the partners will set the right foundations for these strategic plans:

Building a common CO2 balance method
Some partners already calculated their own carbon footprint, but the methods used and the boundaries set for those studies vary from one partner to the other. The partners will join forces to develop a common CO2 calculation method to enable comparisons between each partner’s achievement.

Agreeing on common indicators
In order to compare the achievements of the partners and the efficiency of the investments, the five partners will define common indicators. These will guarantee a transparent and objective interpretation of the outcomes.

Installing energy meters
The partners will have to collect accurate data to support and monitor the implementation of their CO2 strategic plan. A number of energy meters are foreseen to reinforce the partners’ existing monitoring systems.

Offering standard CO2 calculators
Some partners already developed a CO2 calculator that tells people online how much CO2 will be produced when they travel a distance by public transport or by car. Today, the results of those calculators are difficult to compare. The Ticket to Kyoto project will develop a new CO2 calculator, that’s standard to the 5 partners.
