A 23.5m tall wind turbine is being installed at Horwich Park railway station, near Bolton, helping to power the station. Any surplus energy generated by the 11 kilowatt turbine will be sold to the National Grid.
The turbine is a twin-bladed, low-noise, high-efficiency model and is expected to save an estimated 289 tonnes of carbon dioxide over the lifetime of the project.
The turbine is expected to be generating electricity before the summer. Included in the project cost will be an education programme aimed at helping young people understand more about carbon emissions and energy use.
