RET – The ambition of sustainable transport

The desire to offer high-quality, clean urban public transport is at the heart of the strategy being pursued by RET and the Rotterdam City Council. By actively offering an alternative to the car and doing its utmost to counter the process of climate change, they aim to make Rotterdam one of the world's most sustainable cities. With about 3.000 employees, RET transports some 600,000 people daily, operating 42 bus routes, a rail network with 5 metro lines and 9 tram lines, and a fast-ferry service.

50% less CO2
RET has used 100% green electricity since 2007. Current projects include tests with dieselhybrid buses and an aluminum third rail for the metro. The company’s ultimate goal is to improve air quality by cutting 1990-level CO2 emissions in half by 2025.

RET participates in an ambitious climate programme, the Rotterdam Climate Initiative (RCI). The objective of RCI is to develop Rotterdam into a low CO2 city and energy port: the world capital of CO2-free energy.
