Ticket to Kyoto: the project

Reducing CO2 emissions in public transport: that’s what the project Ticket to Kyoto is all about.

Five European public transport companies have joined in a four-year project (2010 - 2014) to reduce CO2 emissions in public transport through more environmentally friendly behaviour and changes in infrastructure. Their goal: introducing the principle of low CO2 emissions as the new standard for public transport providers.

To reach this goal the project is divided into five major action plans:

  • The partners will mobilise themselves to exchange ‘best practices’ in order to achieve quick wins that reduce CO2 emissions in the short term and without large investments.
  • The partners will also initiate new practices and techniques. These are larger investments focusing on recovering power and heat, saving energy through modifications in infrastructure and producing green energy locally.
  • With the support of local stakeholders and governments they will furthermore develop strategic plans that will target neutral CO2 emissions for local public transport by the year 2020.
  • Another goal is to better understand their existing energy context so that policies and regulations can be adapted to facilitate climate change efforts in public transport.
  • Last but not least, Ticket to Kyoto also mobilises the industry and the public to act against climate change. Public campaigns in 2011 and 2013 will encourage citizens and companies to use public transport more often and reduce their own carbon footprint.

The Ticket to Kyoto project is led by the STIB (Brussels, Belgium) and is co-financed by the INTERREG IVB North West-Europe Programme.
